About the Artist
Will Wauneka comes from a long line of Navajo artisans whose hallmark is enviable patience. His mother was a skilled weaver and he learned his silversmithing skills from his grandfather starting at 9 years old. Will grew up in Fort Defiance, Arizona, just east of Canyon de Chelly at the base of the wild Chuska mountains. Growing up in a traditional Navajo household, Will had livestock duties and taught himself how to draw with a sketch pad and pencil, inspired by the beauty around him. After leaving home, Will traveled the country welding on aircraft carriers, powerplants, and bridges. But his first love of fabrication is to showcase beautiful stones in silver or gold. Now 50 years into working with the finest of metals, Will is a master silversmith. He loves a variety of gemstones such as turquoise, onyx, oyster, lapis, and the finer gemstones as well.
Will is particularly close to his grandchildren who also create jewelry in addition to running their professional lives. Will's grandchildren have learned the craft from him and are carrying on the tradition of Navajo silversmithing. Will is proud of their accomplishments and the way they balance their professional careers with their passion for jewelry making. Will's work is a testament to the power of family tradition and the importance of passing down cultural heritage to the next generation.
